Rolling Umbrella Base

This umbrella base rocks. I bought this base for a very large, freestanding umbrella (rectangular) on our deck (to shade my potted vegetables from the blistering South Texas sun). I was concerned that the base couldn't handle the top-heavy umbrella, but it's worked like a champ. We've had some very windy days, and it has held the umbrella perfectly. We do, of course, close the umbrella for bad weather, but this base has worked out very well for us. We've even used it at Halloween to support a "pumpkin scarecrow." Our scarecrow is very top-heavy, but it didn't move at all in this base.

The wheels can be locked so the umbrella doesn't move around, and I've pretty much kept it locked in place. I recommend this base for any residential umbrella, especially if you don't have a table to support the umbrella.

Perfect for our needs; a pain to assemble

We are part-time Florida residents, in a windy coastal area. When we leave for several months, we have always had to bring our free-standing umbrella into the garage to protect it from strong storms. Our previous base was metal and had rusted to the point that we could no longer remove the umbrella, and eventually it wouldn't hold the umbrella upright. The Shademobile is not going to rust, makes it very easy to remove the umbrella, and does roll across our paver pool deck to give maximum sun protection.
Our biggest complaint has been with assembly of the base. We never were able to find any "old" bricks in our area, and finally used the sand (In our experience, 80 pounds of sand is 10-15 pounds too much). Between that and screwing the base together while holding it in an awkward position, we were more than glad to see how well it worked, because we wouldn't have gone through that process a second time.
A second, minor complaint is that the base is not always willing to roll in the direction I had in mind, so it must be maneuvered somewhat if I'm only planning to move it within a small area.

I am updating this review as of mid-2013. After two years of use we still are extremely pleased with the Shademobile. When we leave our winter home it's very easy to roll the stand onto our lanai where it's protected from the weather, and roll it back out again when we return. It has proved very durable and works as well now as when we bought it. Highly recommended.
All in all, the base suits our needs perfectly and in the sandstone shade it blends in well with our paver deck. Some very strong wind this season hasn't caused any tipping or rolling. We are very pleased with the Shademobile and would recommend it.

best umbrella base i've ever had

i bought a 2" umbrella last summer and it wouldn't fit in any of my patio tables or umbrella bases so i went searching for an umbella base slightly larger than 2" to accommodate it. took me a year. i had to buy a new patio set also but that is another story. i hesitated to buy this base because of the price. i thought that was quite expensive but i finally just did it and i am glad i did. i got the bronze color and it looks beautiful with my patio set. instead of bricks or sand, i used an extra bag of landscape rocks i had left over from another project and they worked perfectly and no fitting problems. now you are going to need a power screwdriver because there are lots of screws to hold it together but it is solid and the wheels make moving it around very easy. it also adjusts to several sized umbrellas and it is easy to adjust. all in all, i'm very happy with the shademobile base. yes, it was pricey but it is a "forever" umbrella stand that i'll hand down to my kids.

It could be better for the price.

It is very tall and I had to cut off 3 inches to get it to fit under my resin table.
It has already started to rust where base meets pole support and I have only had it for about 1 month.
The base is big and I have it so the corners are where your feet rest when sitting down. If I square it with the table legs, the legs would be on top off the stand.
This would be a good stand alone umbrella stand or better suited for a large table.
It does do a great job of holding the umbrella even when it is windy out.
One issue with the shipping/packing is that most of the hardware was loose in the box.
If the box developed a hole or tear in it I would have lost some hardware during shipping.

Very sturdy - won't need to replace it...ever.

There are tons of various brands that try to sell their various outdoor products - it's difficult to figure out which ones are reasonably priced for high quality, just high priced, or low quality. Last year, I took the dive with Strathwood (first I had heard of them) with a beautiful Strathwood Basics All-Weather Hardwood 3-Seater Bench. It's an awesome little bench, especially for the price.

So sticking with the same brand seemed like a smart thing to do...and it was. This umbrella base is just as great as their other products. Very easy assembly: two bolts on the bottom, and then, depending on the girth of the pole you put in the base, 2 tightening screws that hold the umbrella in place firmly. And then you have a piece of outdoor yard equipment that will never need replacing. This this is a heavy base that I wouldn't hesitate to put larger umbrella in, and with the little feet on the bottom, putting in on gravel (rather than a pristine deck, for example) is no problem, either. And the powder coat finish means it's not going to start rusting after the first drizzle.

Recommended...likely complements Strathwoods own outdoor furniture (which I don't have), but it looks great with existing tables and chairs, too.

Great for a stand-alone umbrella.

This base is VERY sturdy, and heavy (about 30#). Once you place it somewhere, you will not want to move it very often. It's very durable and functional, but I can't really say that it's "pretty". The pictures show this base being used with a table, but in my opinion, if you have a table then you probably would use a different base that's a lot less expensive than this one that doesn't have to be as sturdy as this one. This base is more suited for a stand-alone base for an umbrella. I like the fact that it's large. . . square and flat. This makes it easy to place something on top of it. The large size makes it less likely to tip-over due to wind.

Could be a bit more functional

Once filled with water, plan on leaving it in place. There's no low-position drain plug, so your only option is to move it full (ugh, even with wheels it's a bear to move) or open the fill cap and flip the unit 180 degrees then rock the thing in your hands once most of the water is gone to get the last gallon or so out. Also, for $60 the wheels gould be a bit heftier.

Someone got it right !!

Coolest outdoor product I have purchased in so long. Live in Arizona where the heat and sunlight short lives everything. I purchased the umbrellas and set them up, not realizing I needed to weigh them down, a few of my umbrellas ended up in the pool, with the help of late afternoon breezes. After purchasing the blow molded weights, filled them with water, and guess what? No more pool diving to rescue my cool looking shaders. I know eventually the weather will break down the polymers, but at this price, no problem.

Again, best deal I have made in so long !

Wrong size, and Amazon ad doesn't tell you

The base doesn't fit my umbrella -- the hole is only 1-1/2" inches in diameter. My umbrella pole is 1-7/8". Nowhere in the Amazon ad is the pole diameter mentioned.

Also, read the fine print: "To prevent rusting, the base should be protected from constant exposure to rain and moisture." In other words, don't use it outside.

I'm impressed...

I purchased this with the square 8 x 8 foot Timber umbrella and I couldn't be happier. This is a very heavy stand and also very attractive. With your umbrella bolted down in this stand you won't have to worry about it blowing away. Update: In mid to strong wind it does tip over, you either have to put it in a table or I put a couple of heavy bricks on it and now it is fine.

nice heavy umbrella stand..

This arrived in a crushed box, but the stand itself was in great shape. I put it together in 5 minutes. Just wish the umbrella I ordered here on Amazon was as good of quality. Unfortunately my umbrella pole bent in half in a strong wind. Strong stand though! My now broken pole stayed upright in the stand!
